Android Go is not a separate OS, it’s a project part of Android O

Android 2A day after Google talked about the Android Go, and made millions of Android phone users who stick to a budget phone happy, at the Google I/O, the company has said that this is not a separate operating system like the way Android One was. Instead the Android Go is an internal project name for a bunch of improvements that the company has built into Android O, the next version of Android that will reach consumers in the coming months.

“There has been some confusion. Android Go is not a separate operating system,” Sameer Samat, vice president of product management, old media on the sidelines of the Google I/O here in Mountain View.To emphasise his point Samat added that even if a phone runs the “Android Go”, the users will get to see that the phone is running Android O.

In a way, the Android Go is more of a product for the phone makers. It will be different from Android O because it will probably lack some fancy animations, that tend to require high-end hardware, and will have some specific features like data saving inbuilt. Android Go phones will also come with well-optimised and lighter versions of key Google services so that the overall experience on a budget phone with low-end hardware is good.

But all of this will be up to the phone makers. Whether they want to use the full-fledged Android O or if they want to use Android Go will be up to them. In settings and about phone section, the users will see that their phone is powered by Android O.

While talking to media Samat also explained the differences between the Android One and Android Go. The big difference is that the Android One was a separate OS, or at least it was pitched as a separate OS. The Android Go, however, is just an internal name within Google.

Another difference is that for Android One, Google asked phone makers to abide by some rules. For hardware for an Android phone was selected by Google. The company also asked the phone makers to stick to pure Android theme – no users interface modification – and promised fast and prompt updates.

With Android Go version of Android O, phone makers will be free to use whatever hardware they deem fit for it. Smart says that Google doesn’t want to choose hardware for its phone partners. It only wants to ensure that Android O (with Android Go features) works well on even those phones that have 512MB RAM.

For now Google has no comments to offer on the availability of the Android Go phones or what price points they may hit. Although, it is expected that Android Go phones could come some time after final release of the Android O, which is expected to be around October when Google launches new Pixel phones.
